M60A1 Main Battle Tank 3rd Bttn., 3rd Armored Division, 1977

Scale 1:72 / Diecast model

The M60 was initially introduced in 1960 and often incorrectly referred to as a Patton. The M60 resembled the M48 because it was based on the M48 but with some significant alterations and improvements. M60 has a 105mm Main Gun while the M48’s was 90mm and the front slope was straight compared to the M48’s rounded front plus other modifications. The M60 was the last U.S. tank to use homogenous steel as well as an escape hatch in the floor for the driver.

JJOODA “Hangman” belonged to the 3rd Battalion, 32nd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored
Division. The HQ5 indicates the tank belongs to the Battalion Headquarters Company of the US 7th Army based in Germany and probably was in service between 1962 and 1980. In 1963 the 3rd Battalion, 32nd Armored Regiment transferred to Germany and assigned to the 3rd Armored Division “Spearhead” whose task was; in the event of war with the Warsaw Pact countries, to defend the Fulda Gap. In 1978 the M60A1 began to be replaced by the M60A3.
